Why we're building this

Personal budgeting apps are everywhere. Shared money is where things actually go wrong.

Most people's financial life is not just their own. There is rent split with flatmates, a family contribution every month, a savings circle at work, a loan to a cousin, a committee collecting for something. These arrangements are run on trust, a chat thread and somebody's notebook.

They work, right up until two people remember the same month differently. Then a small disagreement about money becomes a large disagreement about honesty.

What we decided early

We are a record-keeping platform. We will not hold your money. It would be a bigger business if we did, and it is the most common thing for a product like this to grow into.

We think it would also be a worse product. The moment there is a pot of money in the middle, the question stops being "what did we agree?" and starts being "can I get my money out?" We would rather be excellent at the first question.

How we're building it

Web first, then mobile. Groups before personal finance, because shared money is the harder problem and the one nobody has solved properly. Schemes come last: rotating savings, lending and asset purchases, once the foundation is solid enough to carry them.

KeptPact is early. The waitlist is the honest version of a launch date.
